How to Read Your Consolidated Account Statement (CAS)

Published 2026-10-16 · Aadarna Stock Broking Pvt. Ltd.

Key takeaways

  • The CAS comes from the depository (CDSL or NSDL), not your broker, so it is an independent check on your holdings.
  • It combines your demat accounts and mutual fund holdings linked to your PAN.
  • Check every transaction listed; anything you do not recognise should be reported immediately.
  • Make sure your email is updated so you receive the CAS directly.

Your broker's app shows your holdings, but the official record of what you own sits with the depository. The Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) is how the depository tells you directly what is in your name. Reading it regularly is one of the simplest ways to protect your investments.

This guide explains what the CAS contains and what to look for.

What is the CAS?

The CAS is a statement sent by CDSL or NSDL that brings together, under your PAN, the securities in your demat accounts and your mutual fund holdings. It is sent to your registered email when there are transactions, and periodically even when there are none.

Because it comes from the depository rather than your broker, it lets you check independently that your holdings are correct.

The main sections

  • Investor details: your name, PAN and the period covered. Check that they are yours.
  • Portfolio summary: the total value of your holdings across demat accounts and mutual funds, usually with a breakdown by type.
  • Demat account details: each demat account linked to your PAN, with the Depository Participant's name and your holdings in it.
  • Transactions: every credit and debit in the period, such as purchases, sales, transfers, bonus credits, pledges and unpledges.
  • Mutual fund folios: units held in each folio, with the transactions during the period.

What to check every time

  1. Every demat account listed is one you opened.
  2. Every holding is one you bought, received or applied for.
  3. Every debit matches a sale, transfer or pledge you made yourself.
  4. Pledges shown are ones you authorised.
  5. Mutual fund folios and units match your own records.

The values shown are based on market prices at the statement date. They are a snapshot, not a measure of how your investments have done.

Making the CAS part of your routine

Reading the CAS takes a few minutes and is one of the best habits an investor can build. A simple routine is to open it as soon as it arrives, compare the transactions with your contract notes and mutual fund confirmations, and file it in one folder.

If you invest through more than one broker, the CAS is also the easiest way to see everything in one place. It helps you notice holdings you had forgotten about, demat accounts you no longer use, and folios where your contact details are out of date.

Families can help older members by checking their CAS with them. Many frauds target people who do not look at their statements, so a second pair of eyes is valuable.

If something looks wrong

If you see a transaction you did not make, or a holding that is missing, act quickly:

  1. Contact your Depository Participant or broker in writing with the details from the CAS.
  2. For mutual fund issues, contact the fund house or its registrar as well.
  3. If the issue is not resolved, escalate through the grievance process, then to SEBI's SCORES and, if needed, the SMART ODR portal.

If you are not receiving the CAS

  • Check that your email is updated with your Depository Participant and with your mutual fund folios.
  • Check your spam folder. The CAS often arrives as a password-protected PDF; the password format is explained in the email.
  • You can also request or download statements through the depository's own investor services on the CDSL or NSDL websites.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the CAS value differ from my app?

The CAS values holdings at a specific date and price, while your app updates through the day. Recent trades that have not settled yet may also appear in the app before they appear in the CAS.

Do I need to do anything with the CAS?

Just read it and check that everything is correct. Keep copies, as they are a useful record for your own planning and for tax filing.

My mutual funds are missing from the CAS. Why?

Usually because the folio's PAN, email or KYC details do not match. Contact the fund house or its registrar to update them.
