DDPI Explained: What It Allows Your Broker to Do (and What It Doesn't)

Published 2026-10-16 · Aadarna Stock Broking Pvt. Ltd.

Key takeaways

  • DDPI is an optional instruction that lets your broker debit your demat account only for specific, limited purposes.
  • It replaced the older, broader Power of Attorney (POA) for these purposes.
  • Without DDPI you can still sell, by authorising each sale with your CDSL TPIN and OTP.
  • Never let anyone pressure you into giving DDPI; it is your choice.

When you open a demat account, you may be asked whether you want to submit a DDPI. Many investors sign it without knowing what it means. This guide explains what DDPI is, what it allows, what it does not, and how life works if you choose not to give it.

What is DDPI?

DDPI stands for Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction. It is a document in which you authorise your broker, as your Depository Participant, to debit securities from your demat account only for certain defined purposes.

It was introduced by SEBI to replace the older Power of Attorney (POA) for these purposes. A POA could be drafted broadly. DDPI is narrower and standardised, so it limits what can be done with your holdings.

What DDPI allows

DDPI covers a limited set of uses, such as:

  • Transferring shares you have sold from your demat account to complete settlement of that sale.
  • Creating a pledge or re-pledge of securities for margin, in favour of your broker.
  • Processing mutual fund transactions placed on the stock exchange platform.
  • Tendering shares in an open offer or buyback when you choose to participate.

The exact list is set by SEBI and printed in the DDPI form. Read it before signing.

What DDPI does not allow

  • It does not allow your broker to transfer your shares to anyone else's account for any other purpose.
  • It does not allow trading in your account without your orders.
  • It does not give anyone access to your bank account or your money.
  • It does not allow an Authorised Person or any individual to operate your demat account.

DDPI is optional

Giving DDPI is your choice. A broker cannot refuse to open your account or provide services only because you did not sign it. Some convenience features may need it, but the core services must remain available.

How selling works without DDPI

If you have not given DDPI, you authorise each sale yourself through e-DIS (electronic Delivery Instruction Slip). In practice it works like this:

  1. You place a sell order in your broker's app.
  2. You are asked to authorise the shares from your demat account, usually before or right after selling.
  3. You enter your CDSL TPIN and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  4. The authorisation is valid for the shares and quantity you approved for that day.

It adds a step each time you sell, but it means no shares leave your demat account without your active approval.

Before you sign: a short checklist

  • Read the list of purposes printed on the DDPI form.
  • Make sure the form names your broker as the Depository Participant, not any individual.
  • Keep a copy of what you signed.
  • Confirm that your mobile number and email are registered, so you are alerted to every debit.

Which should you choose?

There is no single right answer. Think about how often you sell and whether you pledge shares for margin. Frequent traders often find DDPI convenient. Investors who rarely sell may be happy authorising each sale with TPIN. Either way, keep your mobile number and email updated, so you receive alerts for every debit from your demat account.

If you gave DDPI earlier and want to revoke it, contact your Depository Participant. The process and any charges are as per its current policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is DDPI the same as a Power of Attorney?

No. A POA could be broad. DDPI is a standard document limited to specific purposes defined by SEBI, such as settling your own sales and creating pledges.

Can I open an account without DDPI?

Yes. DDPI is optional. You can authorise each sale with your CDSL TPIN and OTP instead.

Someone is insisting I give DDPI. What should I do?

You are not obliged to. If anyone pressures you or asks you to give control of your account to an individual, refuse and report it to your broker. No genuine broker or Authorised Person can take your shares or money into their own name.
