SIP vs Lump Sum in Mutual Funds – What's the Difference?
Published 2026-10-15 · Aadarna Stock Broking Pvt. Ltd.
There are two common ways to invest in a mutual fund: a SIP (Systematic Investment Plan), where you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals, or a lump sum, where you invest the whole amount at once. Neither is "better" for everyone. The right choice depends on your cash flow, time horizon and comfort with market ups and downs.
How a SIP works
You choose an amount (many schemes allow small minimum amounts) and a date. The amount is debited from your bank each month through an auto-debit mandate, and units are bought at that day's NAV.
Rupee cost averaging: when the NAV is lower, your fixed amount buys more units; when it is higher, it buys fewer. Over time this spreads out your purchase price. It does not guarantee a profit or protect against losses.
How a lump sum works
You invest the full amount in one go, at a single NAV. Your entire amount is exposed to the market from day one, for better or worse.
Side-by-side
| SIP | Lump sum | |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | Regular income (salary, business) | One-time money (bonus, maturity proceeds) |
| Entry price | Averaged over many dates | Single date |
| Discipline | Builds an investing habit automatically | Needs a one-time decision |
| Timing risk | Spread out | Concentrated |
Questions to ask yourself
- Is this money regular (monthly surplus) or one-time?
- How long can you stay invested without needing it?
- How would you feel if the value fell sharply in the first year?
- Have you read the scheme's riskometer and Scheme Information Document?
Some investors who receive a large amount use a Systematic Transfer Plan (STP), moving money gradually from a debt/liquid fund into an equity fund, as a middle path.
Before you invest
- Check the scheme's riskometer, investment objective and expense ratio.
- Complete your KYC and add a nominee.
- Review your SIPs once a year. Don't stop them just because markets fall in the short term without thinking it through.
