Activating F&O: Income Proof, Risk Disclosure and Questions to Ask

Published 2026-10-29 · Aadarna Stock Broking Pvt. Ltd.

Key takeaways

  • F&O activation is a separate step from opening a trading account. You must submit financial details such as income proof.
  • Brokers ask for income proof to check that you have some financial capacity for a high-risk, leveraged product. It is not a judgement that F&O suits you.
  • The risk disclosure explains that you can lose more than the margin you put in, and that most individual F&O traders have made net losses.
  • Before activating, ask yourself whether you understand how futures and options work, how much loss you can bear, and how costs will affect you.
  • Activation, documents and charges follow Angel One's process and prevailing tariff. Aadarna, as an Authorised Person, can help with the steps but cannot advise you.

When you open a trading and demat account, you can usually buy and sell shares straight away. Trading in futures and options (F&O) is different. The F&O segment stays switched off until you ask for it, submit proof of income and confirm that you have read a risk disclosure.

Many new investors see this as paperwork to finish quickly. It is better seen as a pause point. This article explains why these steps exist, what the risk disclosure actually says, and the honest questions to ask yourself before you go further.

What is F&O, in plain words?

Derivatives are contracts whose value depends on something else, such as a share or an index. The two common types traded on NSE and BSE are futures and options.

A future is an agreement to buy or sell something at a fixed price on a set date. An option gives the buyer the right, but not the duty, to buy or sell at a fixed price before or on a set date. The seller of an option takes on the duty if the buyer uses the right.

F&O uses leverage. This means you put up only a part of the contract's value as margin, a security deposit kept with the broker. Leverage makes both gains and losses larger compared with the money you put in. For example, say a contract is worth ₹5,00,000 and the margin is ₹1,00,000. A small move in price against you can wipe out a large share of your ₹1,00,000, and losses can go beyond it.

Why does the broker ask for income proof?

Your KYC (Know Your Customer) checks who you are. KYC is a one-time exercise: once completed through a SEBI-registered intermediary, it need not be repeated with another intermediary. But KYC alone does not switch on F&O. For the derivatives segment, brokers must also collect details of your financial position.

The reasons are simple:

  • Leverage can create losses larger than your margin. The broker needs some comfort that you have the means to meet margin calls and cover losses.
  • Regulatory duty. Exchange and SEBI rules require brokers to know their clients' financial background before allowing trading in riskier segments.
  • A moment to reflect. The step makes you stop and think before entering a product with a high chance of loss.

Income proof is a basic check, not approval. Being allowed to trade F&O does not mean F&O suits you or that you will make money.

Which documents are usually accepted?

The exact list, format and time period are set by Angel One and can change, so check the latest list on Angel One's website or in the app. Commonly accepted documents include:

  • A recent bank account statement for the period Angel One specifies
  • Recent salary slips
  • An income tax return acknowledgement (tax filing itself is outside the scope of this article)
  • A net worth certificate from a chartered accountant
  • A statement of holdings in your demat account

Upload only your own genuine documents. Never let anyone else submit documents for you or ask you to share your login, OTP or passwords.

What does the risk disclosure tell you?

Before activation, you are shown a Risk Disclosure Document for derivatives. SEBI also requires brokers to show you a risk disclosure based on its own study of F&O traders. Read both slowly. Do not just tick the box.

The SEBI study, dated January 25, 2023 and based on FY 2021-22 data, found that:

  • 9 out of 10 individual traders in equity F&O incurred net losses.
  • Loss makers registered an average net trading loss close to ₹50,000.
  • Loss makers spent an additional 28% of net trading losses as transaction costs.
  • Those making net trading profits incurred between 15% and 50% of such profits as transaction costs.

The Risk Disclosure Document also explains points such as these:

  • You can lose more than the margin you deposit.
  • Margin requirements can rise suddenly, and you may get a margin call, a demand to add money quickly.
  • If you do not add margin in time, the broker can square off (close) your positions at a loss.
  • Some contracts may be hard to buy or sell at a fair price when trading is thin.
  • Options can lose value quickly as expiry nears. Option sellers can face very large losses.

Questions to ask yourself before activating

Only you can decide whether F&O fits your situation. These questions can help you think it through honestly:

  1. Do I understand how futures and options work? Can I explain lot size, margin, expiry, premium and settlement in my own words?
  2. How much money can I afford to lose completely? Is this money separate from my emergency fund, rent, school fees and other needs?
  3. Can I meet a sudden margin call? If the market moves against me in a day, where will extra money come from?
  4. Have I counted all costs? Brokerage, exchange charges, taxes and other levies add up with every trade. Check Angel One's prevailing tariff.
  5. Why do I want to trade F&O? Is it because of a social media post, a friend's story or talk of quick money? These are warning signs.
  6. Do I have time to watch my positions? Leveraged positions can change sharply within hours.
  7. How will a loss affect me and my family? Think about the emotional strain, not just the money.

If any answer worries you, it is reasonable to wait, learn more, or not activate at all. You do not lose anything by taking time.

How activation works, and what to watch for

The general steps on Angel One's platform are usually: go to the segment activation section in your profile, select the derivatives segment, upload income proof, read and accept the risk disclosures, and wait for verification. The exact screens and timelines are as per Angel One.

If you plan to use shares you already hold as margin, note that since September 1, 2020, stock brokers can accept securities as margin from clients only by way of pledge in the depository system. You approve the pledge through your depository, CDSL or NSDL. Pledging lets you use holdings as margin, but it does not remove risk. If losses mount, pledged shares can be sold to recover dues.

Be careful of fraud. F&O always carries the risk of loss. Stay away from anyone who offers trading tips, claims you are sure to make money, asks you to share your account, or offers to trade for you. You can raise complaints through SEBI's SCORES portal.

Frequently asked questions

Is income proof the same as KYC?

No. KYC confirms your identity and address and is a one-time exercise across SEBI-registered intermediaries. Income proof is an extra financial check needed to switch on the derivatives segment. You can have complete KYC and still have F&O switched off.

Does submitting income proof mean I am suitable for F&O?

No. It only shows that you meet a basic financial check. It does not mean F&O is right for you or that you will make profits. That decision is yours, after reading the risk disclosures.

Can Aadarna tell me whether I should trade F&O?

No. Aadarna is an Authorised Person of Angel One Ltd. and an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor, not an investment adviser. We can help you with the activation process and documents, but we cannot give advice, tips or views on what to trade.

Can I switch off F&O after activating it?

Generally, you can ask for a segment to be deactivated through Angel One's process. Close or settle any open positions first. Check the steps in the Angel One app or on its website.
